On Friday afternoon, July 24, 2026, a major storm system blew through Albuquerque, dropping about 1.5" of water in a short time. This caused the eastern part of Copper Avenue (towards Eubank) to become "Copper River", as the rainwater backed up. It overflowed even some stretches of the road and of the sidewalks (not counting the "curb cuts" at the corners and driveways)! The following pictures were taken at the corner of Altez & Copper. There are storm drains on the western end of Copper by Wyoming, but SLANA will be looking into what can be done to alleviate the flooding. Unfortunately, it looks like all measures are quite expensive: either extending the storm drain system to the east, or installing Green Stormwater Infrastructure, such as was done in District 7. Both would require some measure of disruption to Copper Avenue (and likely the residents who live adjacent to it), but the GSI appears to be less disruptive. Extending the storm drain system will likely require massive disruption of Copper Avenue, including fully repaving it.
SLANA will be in talks with our city representatives to discuss options and see what is feasible. As always, your input is welcomed and valuable! You can leave a comment on this post, Contact Us, come to our meetings, or contact your city representatives with ideas. If you have photos of the flooding in your area, that may be helpful to let the city know the extent of affected area.

At the Board Meeting, we met our two new prospective Board Members, Daniel Holliday and Jesse Leal.
Daniel was born and raised here in the South Los Altos neighborhood, moved away for a time and then came back. His main reasons for wanting to join SLANA as a Board Member is that he has seen the neighborhood decline, and wants to help change it. He is concerned about people from outside the neighborhood causing problems in the neighborhood, such as stealing things. He would also like to reduce the incidents of people speeding through the neighborhood, perhaps with signage reminding people it’s a residential / neighborhood area and/or with speed bumps. Jesse owns and manages the neighborhood State Farm, located at the corner of Buena Ventura and Eubank. He has been here for 15 years, while his predecessor was there 32 years before that! He insures a lot of people in the area, and tries to work with business and resident neighbors including with safety (cameras, clean brush/bushes), as well as allowing a food truck on weekends for activity (so the parking lot isn’t empty all weekend and looks better). Pres. Eileen Jessen report on the upcoming National Night Out:
Kathy Petersen made a motion to accept Daniel Holliday and Jesse Leal as new Board Members, Allen Osborn seconded; unanimous vote. Tonight's guest speaker was Laura Kuehn, APD police liaison, and she spoke about a great many topics. First, she spoke about the upcoming National Night Out, which will be held on August 4. South Los Altos's NNO will begin at 6 p.m., and it will be held at our Daniel Webster Park, which is located at the corner of Copper & General Arnold. Last year everyone had a great time, and we hope to see even more people this year! Plans are being made, but we expect to have music, food (from food trucks as well as potluck), games, prizes, and a whole lot of fun! It will also coincide with the August Neighborhood Association General Meeting. Laura also spoke about various initiatives and programs that the Albuquerque Police Department is engaged in, to help make our city a safer and friendlier place to live and work. For instance, the next "Coffee with a Cop" will be at June 4 from 10-11:30 a.m. It is hosted by El Mesquite Market near San Pedro & Central, and they will have sample pastries! Stop by to meet some of the brave "men in blue", and support and thank El Mesquite for hosting. APD is also now offering de-escalation training for businesses! This training is designed to foster good communication skills, as well as training businesses in the signs to look for in people who may be under the influence, and how best to handle them, to keep the situation as calm as possible. You can read more about it at KOAT or KRQE. Other operations Laura spoke about include the following:
Finally, she gave a rundown of several crime statistics (year-to-date). First, she noted that in our South Los Altos neighborhood, there were 2,452 total calls for service. About half of those are proactive, which she explained as being times when an officer noticed something suspicious while already out, a homeowner or business asked for cops to periodically check the property while they’re out, and other things of that nature. She also noted that there were more than 65,000 car stops in the entire city, with 172 in our neighborhood. Other statistics for our neighborhood included the following:
We thank Laura Kuehn for taking the time to share this information and answer questions from residents. It was encouraging to hear about the many efforts underway to improve public safety and strengthen community engagement throughout Albuquerque. As always, staying informed and involved is one of the best ways we can work together to keep South Los Altos a safe, welcoming, and vibrant neighborhood. |
